Today’s featured member Mary Kay Clunies-Ross, a communication consultant, said Sunshine Communications helps organizations achieve their goals by improving how they share information.Tell us about your organization

“Communication consultant” is a common label, but vague. I’ve helped boards manage leadership transitions, helped organizations respond to media attention, helped departments improve their internal operations, and trained subject matter experts to talk like people. Sunshine is the best disinfectant; it’s also energy and an essential condition for growth.

Why did you join the Chamber?

One person can’t make a pencil. I joined the Chamber for two reasons: First, I support it because it supports the dreams and economic stability of the city I love best in the world. Be it a bakery, bookstore, app, podcast, yoga studio, or whatever, every business starts with a person dreaming of doing their own thing. I want Seattle to always be the kind of city where people can dream big, be their own bosses, and do cool stuff. The Chamber is essential to fostering a local ecosystem of innovation and opportunity and keeping the door open for the next generation.

The second reason I joined is because they support me. I love working for myself, but I need to learn from others and be inspired by others. The Chamber convenes small restaurants, large software companies, nonprofits, airlines, and artisans, so every event is like living in a “How I Built This” podcast. I always leave more energized and more creative, and I’m so grateful for that.

What are you/is your business interested in or what do you need currently?

I can’t do everything my clients need, so I work in teams. I’m always on the lookout for partners with complementary expertise, such as graphic design, social media, video production, web design, training, etc., and I like to work with smaller firms that can move fast. It would be great to know more local women and BIPOC-owned communication firms. I can’t do every project I want to, and I’m not always the right fit. People shared work with me, and I want to do the same, but also, it’s just fun to know other people in the same business! Whether you cross-pollinate, collaborate, or commiserate, it’s all to the good.
