Following the Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision in Dobbs v. Jackson, Seattle Metro Chamber President & CEO Rachel Smith issued the following statement:
“Today’s Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade strips away constitutional protection for a medical procedure that one in four American women will have in their lifetime. The Seattle Metro Chamber is dedicated to a more equitable and inclusive economy, and reducing safe, legal access to healthcare flies directly in the face of that goal. I applaud our members who have already taken steps to support their employees having full access to medical care, including reproductive care.”
“As a woman, it is impossible to see the decision out of the Supreme Court as anything but political. Arguments in support of government regulating a woman’s body, and decisions between her and her doctor, are not based in law, or science, or governmental responsibility. It is about control, plain and simple.”
“And as a believer in governmental institutions, it is hard not to fear what this means for the court’s role in the system of checks and balances. I’m grateful for the abortion protections we have here in Washington, and I am saddened and angered by today’s ruling, which takes away freedom and choice for millions, including people in my home state of Oklahoma.”
