SEATTLE – The Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce Board of Trustees voted to endorse Sound Transit’s ST3 measure, a 25-year plan to significantly increase high-capacity transit in the Seattle metro region. Major elements of ST3 include completion of a regional light rail system capable of moving over 1 million people per day, bus rapid transit service on the I-405 corridor, and increased capacity for commuter rail.
“Passing ST3 is the most critical action that our region can take this November to invest in our future, and the business community is proud to endorse this measure,” said Chamber President and CEO Maud Daudon.
She added, “The Chamber has successfully advocated for more than $22 billion in transit investments over the past 20 years because they are integral to an economically vibrant, globally competitive region where businesses can flourish and everyone can access a thriving quality of life. Our region has a chance to get it right by dramatically expanding our regional light rail system. People in Seattle lost over 60 hours to traffic delays last year—we can’t afford to wait to get people moving.”
The Chamber’s endorsement of ST3 is the latest example of the organization’s deep-rooted support for thoughtful transit investments. Last year, the Chamber helped lead a coalition that convinced the state legislature to approve the funding authority making ST 3 possible. The organization has also supported numerous measures for added bus service in Seattle and King County, and played an active role in the campaigns for the first two phases of light rail construction, Sound Move and ST2.
