In recent years Mexico’s economy has been increasingly driven by entrepreneurial talent. The country has emerged as one of the fastest-growing tech hubs in Latin America with significant expertise in R&D, manufacturing and other areas. The country holds significant relationships with Washington state, including ties in business, education, investment and more. The mission will look to foster stronger and deeper relationships and lasting connections with key leaders and businesses in Mexico for the betterment of Greater Seattle’s regional economy.
On this trip you will:
- Learn from the best in the business – Engage leadership in the fastest growing, most innovative economies on their thinking, operations, and best practices
- Gain insights on greater Seattle’s competitiveness – Benchmark greater Seattle against the best global cities in the world
- Connect with fellow regional leaders – Form deeper relationships with you peers
- Grow your business network globally – Build and enhance lasting partnerships with local business leaders
With the second-largest economy in Latin America and a GDP growth rate of 2.5% (as of 2015), the U.S. has become the top exporting and importing partner for Mexico. Mexico is Washington State’s 12th largest merchandise customer—purchasing over $1.87 billion in goods including aerospace, agriculture and computer and electronic products—which puts our state in a strong position with great opportunity for growth.
Our trip will start in the state of Jalisco, a sister state to Washington. We’ll visit Guadalajara, the 2nd most populous city in Mexico and considered to be the Silicon Valley of Mexico. Our trip will continue to Mexico City building on the special relationship most recently reaffirmed by Seattle Mayor Ed Murray signing an MOU with Mexico City’s Chief of Government to call for collaboration on trade and the economy, information and clean technologies, education, and other fields of common interest. The International Leadership Mission will run in conjunction and be coordinated with a Washington State Trade Mission, which will focus on B2B export opportunities for small businesses and market access for WA’s agriculture exports. The Trade Alliance and Seattle Metro Chamber will work closely with the Washington State Departments of Commerce and Agriculture to collaborate and coordinate on key group meetings for both delegations in Guadalajara and Mexico City. We are very excited to embark on this ground-breaking trip and to be working with the State of Washington.
